At I-Sells, we know the value of making sure where you live feels like home. Home is where we should feel comfortable, safe and secure. But unfortunately, sometimes poor maintenance or insufficient protection can bring mould into your home.
In this article, we’re going to explain to you the cause and effects of mould and why proper anti condensation or anti mould protection is so important. By the end of this article, we hope to answer the question:
“Should you use anti condensation or anti mould?”
Before you ask which is the better option; anti condensation or anti mould, let us explain to you what mould is, and its cause.
Explaining the cause of mould
There are many different types of mould, the common moulds found indoors are black mould, Alternaria & penicillium. Regardless of the type of mould, prolonged exposure can present serious health implications.
Within your home, mould can appear commonly due to improper humidity management or insufficient protection from mould in the paint used, which together create the perfect environment for mould to thrive.
Below is a brief description of the common types of mould that we mentioned above.
Black mould
Commonly found in bathrooms and any other rooms which are exposed to a lot of moisture. Often mistaken for ordinary dirt and grime, and can possibly go untreated for months or years at a time. It has a slimy, wet texture.
Alternaria
Common all year round but particularly prevalent around July to September due to the higher levels of heat in the environment causing humidity. This type of mould is found in damp areas indoors, this could be around a leak, in the shower or around and under the sink.
Penicillium
Most of us will be familiar with this type of mould because it’s present everywhere, particularly in food. It’s the fuzzy blue texture we see when food has gone out of date or is not stored properly. Aside from spoiled food products, penicillium can also be found on organic, biodegradable substances such as wood, leaves and grass.

The dangers of mould can be potentially fatal depending on your sensitivity to it, along with the severity of the mould your home is afflicted with. Access our blog on anti-mould paint, which features the possible health implications brought on by mould.
If you have mould in your home, you first need to assess if this is your landlord’s responsibility (for example it could be from a leaking roof that needs repairing). Or if the mould is caused by improper ventilation. To assess your options, click here. Anti-condensation methods include proper ventilation of your home, along with the usage of extractors or anti-condensation paint. Anti-mould methods include using anti-mould paint and/or using anti-mould surface cleaners, whilst also addressing if there are any leaks in your piping or anywhere in the home. Below, we will share with you the best solutions we have to offer to secure your home from mould.
The benefits of Anti-mould paint

Anti-mould paint works by adding certain chemicals to paint which vary from manufacturer. Commonly, benzisothiazolone is found within anti-mould paint, a biocide which acts as a microbicide and fungicide that destroys mould upon contact. Below, we’ll share with you our Anti-mould paint products that will keep your home mould free.
Kair Anti Mould Paint 1 Litre White
&
Kair Anti Mould Paint 1 Litre Magnolia
Kair Anti Mould Paint is an excellent, premium quality, low odour anti-mould coating guaranteed to protect against unsightly and unhygienic black mould even when there is persistent condensation. Offering 5 years’ worth of protection against black mould growth on walls and ceilings. We offer options in white and magnolia.
The unsurpassed performance is achieved by combining modern paint technology with highly advanced, proven biocides. The anti-mould biocide is combined throughout the paint film, which is formulated to impart toughness, elasticity, water resistance and durability to the finish. You’ll find with this product that it is:
- Easy to use
- Fast Drying
- Low Odour
- Ideal for walls and ceilings
- Long-lasting protection
- Matt Finish
For best results, you should wash mouldy surfaces with Kair Anti Mould Surface Cleanser Concentrate beforehand. As it is specifically designed to clean and treat mould growth areas.
On new plasterwork or porous surfaces, apply an initial coat of Kair Anti Mould Paint thinned up to 10% with water. New plasterwork should be allowed to dry for 7 – 14 days before any decoration. A unique feature is once the paint is fully dry, it is also safe from the effects of condensation, meaning it is both anti-mould and anti-condensation.
You may be wondering, Does Anti-mould paint work? We can confidently say yes. However, this is only if adequate humidity management is implemented alongside its application.
Can you paint over anti-mould paint? The answer is no. Applying a layer of any other paint will cover the biocide, which prevents the intended effects of the Kair Anti Mould Paint from working.
We understand you may want more colour options in our anti-mould paint, that’s why we offer the anti-mould additive.

Anti-condensation paint

Anti-condensation paint offers protection from the source of black mould which is humidity. Through chemicals that help insulate the wall that the paint is applied to whilst also reducing wetness. Insulation provided by anti-condensation paint makes use of glass bubble technology.
Glass bubbles are 100% non-toxic hollow spheres about the thickness of human hair that, when incorporated into a paint film, provide a thermal barrier between cold surfaces and the warmer ambient temperature within a living space.
Again you may be wondering, “does anti-condensation paint work?” The answer is yes, to a degree. This is subjective to the levels of humidity your house normally experiences, along with the number of layers of anti-condensation paint that are added.
Similarly with the question “can you paint over ant-condensation paint?” The answer is no. Unless the layer you are painting over is the same anti-condensation paint. Using any other paint will negate the effects as moisture, like mould, will be present at the top layer or surface of painted areas.
With this understanding, you may be stuck between anti condensation or anti mould paint, read on to find what we know to be the right answer.
