Hanging flexible ducts is necessary in a fair few cases of ducting installation. Doing so can provide an improved airflow to your HVAC system. But how do you hang ducts? Can you hang them properly with everyday items? Or is specialist equipment and expertise required?
In this blog, we provide guidance on how to hang flexible ducts.
With new buildings being made to be as energy efficient as possible, and the UK aiming for 95% of its electricity usage to be low carbon by 2030, it is imperative to understand how we can make the most of our ventilation. This is where MVHR units come in.
To prevent mould, fresh air should constantly be introduced into your dwelling daily, as it helps to regulate temperature and reduce condensation. Introducing fresh air can be as simple as having a ventilation routine, or installing extractors or MVHR units. Almost all of this is facilitated by ducting.
I-Sells is here to provide the answers you need whilst also supplying you with all the information you need to combat mould and have a well-ventilated home.
Why do I need to hang flexible ducting?
Depending on the area of installation, flexible ducting can sometimes require hanging. The reason for this is to provide as little resistance for any airflow that travels through the duct. Ducting that is too long, or bends multiple times, has a reduced airflow efficiency.
Air travels at its most efficient in a straight line, so making sure your ducting is as straight as possible aids this.
Ducting should also be taut to ensure there is little to no sag, whether it is hanging or not. Sagging within flexible ducting makes bends and spaces that reduce airflow, and can accumulate dust.
Can I hang flexible ducting in any room?
In essence, flexible ducting has the potential to be hung across any room, but it doesn’t always have to. Having a consultation or installation from a HVAC technician will ensure that ducting is only hanging wherever it is absolutely necessary.
Can ducting that has been cut, also be hanged?
Yes, as long as the ducting has been secured properly, it should still be able to be hung if required, though this may vary depending on the method it was secured.
Ideally, the cut ends of a flexible duct, which are attached to a rigid connector, should be secured using quick release worm drive clips, or another form of secure clip. If the ducting has been attached incorrectly, it will either come apart once it is hung, or will sag directly from the point it is hanging by.
Securing the services of a HVAC technician is the best way to ensure your ducting is as secure as possible with no unnecessary airflow restriction.

When it comes to hanging flexible ducts, you should make sure that…
- The ducting is not sagging before or after the strap it is hanging from. This creates unnecessary bends that reduce airflow. If there is any sagging, it should be no more than half an inch per foot between the supports.
- Depending on the length of the hanging ducting, an appropriate amount of saddle straps at an equal distance apart no greater than 4 feet (1.22 metres) each, will ensure the ducting does not sag whilst it is hanging. Ducting also has manufacturer recommendation when referring to hanging procedures, so be sure to follow them.
- Not to use string, rope, or any other inappropriate material or makeshift item in order to hang the ducting.
- Ensure the area that the strap is hanging from can support the weight, and has no way of loosening the strap.
- Make sure the ducting is extended as much as possible before installing and hanging it.
If you are struggling, HVAC technicians likely have installation services that include hanging ducting, they can provide the right guidance, or service to do this for you.
What happens if I don’t hang flexible ducting?
If you don’t hang flexible ducting, it can still attach from one end to another, but it will be extremely saggy and slack. Having ducting that is slack is essentially having the air running through more ducting than it needs to, reducing efficiency and creating pockets that can build dust over time.
Having unhung and slack ducting creates unnecessary bends within the ducting, these bends can result in a further reduction of airflow efficiency.
Neglecting to hang your ducting wherever relevant will mean your ducting is just on the floor. This presents a problem, especially if it is uninsulated. Having your ducting on the floor can result in rodents, or even debris, damaging or ripping the ducting.
Can hanging my ducting damage it?
The only situation in which hanging your ducting can damage it, is if the ducting is old and had not been moved prior to attempting to hang it. This is especially the case if the ducting was also poorly maintained over the years, or already had damages.
To avoid damaging a duct whilst hanging it, you should prop up all the relative areas that will be hung prior and during the installation of the hanging mechanisms.
Is flexible ducting the worst option?
![Is flexible ducting the worst option?](https://www.i-sells.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/shutterstock_1107148064.jpg)
On the contrary, flexible ducting has the potential to be the best option for most people with a HVAC system and little space to accommodate rigid ducting. The only times flexible ducting isn’t optimal, is if…
- It is installed poorly
- The ducting itself is old
- The HVAC system is not functioning properly
- The ducting is not insulated (if needed).
- It has not been assessed or maintained at any time by a professional after installation.
- If the ducting has not been replaced after an event like a fire.
- The ducting has holes in it
- The ducting has moisture in it.
- The ducting has mould in it.
Where to find flexible ducting options
I-Sells is a provider of ventilation solutions and everything that comes with it, including ducting. We supply flexible ducting and much more.
Whether it is flexible aluminium or PVC ducting you’re searching for, we have it. Some of our options can also vary in diameter in accordance with your needs. This includes 100 mm and 102 mm in diameter. This also applies to the lengths we have available.
Installing ducting, who can do it?
HVAC technicians offer services which can include installation of a HVAC system and its ducting for most if not all kinds of properties. Please note that the complexity of the job at hand could alter the price if there are no fixed rates for certain services.
Alternatively, you can install your ducting yourself, as long as it ends up being compliant to part F of building regulations, and does not compromise the safety of any person in the property.
Though this second option can be especially difficult if you have no experience, equipment, or guidance. If you are struggling, please feel free to contact us, and we may be able to point you in the right direction.
