Several previous questions relate to this issue but Im not convinced by the answers. I am installing two fans that will vent through a joint vertical pipe that exits through the roof (near to vertical). The damper flap will therefore rest in the horizontal position on the lip and some force appears to be required to push it open from this position. There are limited options for creating a horizontal run without inserting some right angles, reducing air flow. I want to use a backdraught shutter on both fans, one of which is a trickle fan. Can you assure me that the flap will open sufficiently if installed in a horizontal position within a vertical pipe, on the low flow of air pushed up by the trickle fan.

Hullo. Please could you tell me if I could use DUCVKC303 (with a short section of 100mm pipe) to effectively lengthen the male section of a standard 100mm ceiling extraction fan? I need to connect a fan (not yet purchased) to an existing flexible hose (presumably 102mm) which has tears in the first 50mm, so an extended connection length might allow me to bypass this and achieve a reasonable seal, as well as have the benefit of the backdraft shutter. Hope this makes sense! Thanks very much for any advice you can offer; Im ready to order the necessary items from you.

Hi, I bought this to fit vertically in pipework above my kitchen extractor fan. The purpose to blow open when the fan is on and then as Ive read the flap then falls closed by gravity once the fan stops to stop any back smells coming through if you are connected to another system which I am. This vertical pipe runs into a horizontal tee piece. One end going to the outside and the other is an extractor in another room. My concern is that the flap doesnt seen to close with gravity. Even if I hold it in my hand and push the flap up it wont fall back into place. My worry is its not going to do the job I bought it for. Let me know what you think please

Read moreanswer nowA Hello GordonThis one is not really designed to be installed in a vertical duct as when the spigot is opened it becomes balanced and there is no weight to make it fall back into place. For your requirements we would suggest the Manrose 1231 which has a hairspring close mechanism, this can be found by entering QS18115 in the quick search bar.

QCan this damper be reversed and used to prevent ingress of air until an adjacent kitchen extractor is turned on and then allowing air supply?answer nowA Hello TerryThis is a gravity damper that is designed to be installed in an exhaust duct and remain closed until such time that it is opened by passing extract air from a kitchen or bathroom fan, as soon as air stops passing over the spigot it just falls back into place, please bear in mind it is a one way only valve.
Does it matter which direction it is fitted?

I have handled these products before and know how delicate the gravity hinged-flaps can be. Answer 2 states cannot be used in vertical run. Does this not apply to downward pumped flow only? My duct flows upwards to a pitched roof outlet. From memory, the shutter would fall shut, even better than in the horizontal position. Am I right please? Alternatively can you recommend a sprung-shutter type of the same outside diameter? Thank you.

We have an extractor fan going straight through the kitchen wall. When it is windy it whistles through making a loud howling noise. Will this stop it and will the fan be strong enough to open it.

Can this connector/ damper be used and will it work in the vertical position close to the extract unit where it can be accessed for cleaning purposes?

We have a Siemens kitchen canopy connected to a 150 dia duct sticking through a flat roof with a SS cowl. We are getting cold air coming down the pipe when the fan is not on. Will this stop it? and will the extract have enough power to open the shutter. Or should we use the SS one?

Yes the backdraught shutter has to be installed horizontal. If installed vertically it would be open all the time. I would recommend it to be installed just before going out though the wall.

Qdoes this product shut with gravity, or is it spring loaded, is it floppy when its windyanswer nowA Hello John, The item does not contain a spring and therefore pivots based on gravity and fan pressure.The shutter is designed to only open one way and therefore the item will not flap backwards due to the wind, although if there is more pressure on one side than is being generated by teh fan your shutter may struggle to open.Kind regards, Michael

This is a very simple device and therefore I consider it will be low/no maintenance as there is not much that can wear out, have fitted on a slight angle which Im hoping will ensure gravity stops it from knocking in blustery winds, time will tell, if Im wrong then it is easy to remove the flap by squeezing the fitting and then the flap pops out (which will also be handy if it ever needs dust removed).

Shutter arrived on the estimated date. Simple unit which is well designed. Easy to install and no fittings required. You need to make sure that the unit is installed in the correct orientation to suit the airflow from the fan and so that the flap falls to the shut position when the fan is not switched on.

seems to work OK. Just fits into the Kair insulated ducting with a bit of fiddling. I think there should be a product that fits directly onto an in-line-fans outlet, or alternatively the wall vent outlet or tile vent outlet. The ducting could then be attached to the backdraft shutter.
