Cooker hoods provide a valuable service, getting rid of excess smoke, steam, smells and humidity, but what if you already have a MVHR system? Is a cooker hood required? What about if you already have a cooker hood? Is MVHR required?
In this blog, we will be answering the question ‘Do you need a cooker hood with MVHR?’
With new buildings being made to be as energy efficient as possible, and the UK aiming for 95% of its electricity usage to be low carbon by 2030, it is imperative to understand how we can make the most of our ventilation. This is where MVHR units come in.
To prevent mould, fresh air should constantly be introduced into your dwelling daily, as it helps to regulate temperature and reduce condensation. Introducing fresh air can be as simple as having a ventilation routine, or installing extractors or MVHR units. Almost all of this is facilitated by ducting.
I-Sells is here to provide the answers you need whilst also supplying you with all the information you need to combat mould and have a well-ventilated home.
What is a cooker hood?

A cooker hood is a fairly large vented extraction fan. It has the task of extracting steam, smoke and/or odours whilst you cook. They are more often than not placed directly above your hob/oven.
The extracted materials are then led through a vent which leads directly outside, this is a one-way system designed specifically to expel pollutants and excess heat.
Cooker hoods usually come with settings that allow you to operate it at different levels. These different levels result in a higher output, the higher you go. The result is the extraction is completed at a quicker rate, at the expense of a louder sound and a larger amount of energy being used.
What happens if I don’t use my cooker hood?
Not using your cooker hood will result in the following…
- A build up of humidity as a result of steam not being able to leave.
- The build up of steam can transfer onto surfaces as condensation.
- Surfaces with condensation can result in mould forming.
- You may get burned from the steam.
- You may choke from any smoke that is emitted
- You can end up smelling like your cooking, which isn’t ideal if you want to avoid that in the first place.
You should use your cooker hood frequently when cooking. Opening a window whilst using it can make it more effective.
What does MVHR stand for?
MVHR is a term used in the HVAC industry, MVHR stands for ‘Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery’. This is the technical term for what is generally known as heat recovery units, or heat recovery systems.
Heat recovery systems provide all the benefits of regular ventilation with the unique addition of being able to retain heat that would have been lost with regular ventilation. Heat recovery systems can come in single or multi-room applications.
Are there any advantages of MVHR?
Yes, there are many advantages of a MVHR system, the key advantage is its ability to retain warmth without contributing to humidity. This saves money that could be spent heating your home, whilst helping to prevent the environment that mould thrives in.
The aim of a heat recovery system, aside from recovering any heat that is lost through ventilation, is to create an environment in which condensation, and consequently mould, can’t survive.
The advantages of heat recovery systems are the following:
- Holds all the benefits of an extractor, including the removal of stale air, humidity and smells.
- It helps to prevent the cultivation of mould through the removal of humidity.
- Temperature sensors ensure that additional heat is not being added to the atmosphere of the home if it is already hot.
- Heat recovery systems take a lot of the burden from you conducting a ventilation routine. This is ideal for a vulnerable person.
- Less of a need to use your central heating frequently as the heat generated through your house is recycled through the heat recovery unit.
- The reduced use of heating as a result of the heat conservation granted by a heat recovery unit can help you save on energy bills.

Having a cooker hood is not specifically required in order for you to have a MVHR system in your home. That being said, all homes should have a cooker hood available to use.
Cooker hoods work by extracting the steam, smoke, or smells that are emitted from cooking, they are almost always placed above your cooker unit. They have a more powerful extraction rate in comparison to a MVHR system, but their usage starts and stops with extraction.
You should always use an extractor fan when cooking in your kitchen, doing this with your window open and MVHR unit active ensures little to no condensation will find its way onto your surfaces.
Do I require a MVHR in my kitchen?
If your MVHR unit can be installed in your kitchen, then yes, it is always a good idea to have one handy. As mentioned earlier, extractors only remove, they don’t recycle any lost heat or replace the air that was taken.
This is why having a MVHR unit in your kitchen can be advantageous to you, as they do both functions, in addition to extraction.
What if I have an extractor fan and a cooker hood?
This is not a problem, the extractor fan can work in conjunction with the cooker hood to remove any humidity or smoke. However, you may be losing more heat than you would if you had used a MVHR system instead of a regular extractor fan.
Is single room MVHR better than multi-room?
This is dependent on your specific needs. If you find that one room in your home has a ventilation/ heat recovery concern, then on this occasion a single room unit would be better.
On the other hand, multi room units provide an all encompassing control which allows you to have a standardised temperature in your whole home, should you require that.
What if my home is too hot for a heat recovery system?
If your home is already too hot, it could be down to two main issues…
- Overusing the central heating.
- Not ventilating the home at all.
In both instances, MVHR systems can help. Firstly, turning your heating off will help the most, but MVHR systems stop heat recovery when the home hits a certain temperature, this means you can get all the benefits of the system without the extra heat. This is ideal in the summer months.
MVHR systems can also help a poorly ventilated home by providing ventilation, this in turn will cool the house to a comfortable temperature. This can helped by a ventilation routine, which is as simple as opening windows for 20 minutes a day.
