Mould can take its toll on people, in many different ways, whether the mould is on your walls or on the ceiling, wherever it is, it should be removed as soon as possible
In this blog, we will show you how to clean mould off walls
To prevent mould, fresh air should constantly be introduced into your dwelling daily, as it helps to regulate temperature and reduce condensation. Introducing fresh air can be as simple as having a ventilation routine, or installing extractors or PIV systems. Almost all of this is facilitated by ducting.
Mould/Damp explained
I-Sells is here to provide the answers you need whilst also supplying you with all the information you need to combat mould and have a well-ventilated home.
Mould, otherwise known as damp, is a fungus that grows on wet surfaces. Mould comes in a variety of colours: Black, Green, Brown, Grey and White. It can be difficult to identify mould by colour as it can occur in many shades. Some of the most common mould strains in the home are:
- Black Mould – Also called Stachybotrys chartarum, Black mould is commonly found in bathrooms and wet rooms but can also occur on cold exterior walls in habitable rooms such as the bedroom or living room.
- Cladosporium – Commonly found in bathrooms, under sinks, and around faucets but it can grow on surfaces like carpets, furniture, walls, and floors.
Mould reproduces from tiny spores. The spores float through the air and deposit on the surfaces. Under adequate temperature, moisture, and nutrient conditions, the spores can form new mould colonies.
If you have found mould in your home, you need to assess if this is your landlord’s responsibility (for example it could be from a leaking roof that needs repairing). Or if the dampness is caused by improper ventilation. To assess your options, click here.
Symptoms of mould exposure
![Symptoms of mould exposure](https://www.i-sells.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/shutterstock_1618304920.jpg)
Mould can severely affect your immune and respiratory system, as the spores are easily breathable and not obvious to see through the human eye. Having a mould allergy, or prolonged exposure to mould will result in you displaying the following symptoms when exposed to mouldy environments.
- Dry, scaly skin
- Nasal congestion
- A cough
- Watery eyes
- A weakened immune system
Everyone’s symptoms may vary, but if you’re in an environment with mould and experience these symptoms, try your best to remove the mould as soon as possible.
Can any house develop mould?
Yes, any house, or building has the potential to develop mould if the area is left without any ventilation treatment and sealing of cracks and holes.
You should never overlook the danger of mould. A tiny amount can develop into a large patch if it is not addressed, it will not only damage your home but your health too. Mould-proofing your house should always be done, always remove any mould as soon as you possibly can.
How to clean mould off walls
Cleaning mould from your walls isn’t as simple as a soapy sponge and a quick wipe down, although this may dislodge some mould, it is not a safe or efficient way to remove it. Mould should be removed with cleaners that have anti-fungal properties, to ensure the mould is killed.
At I-Sells, we sell a whole host of mould control products, alongside anti mould paint. We offer the Kair Mould Control Pack, a bundle with the previously mentioned surface cleaner, and two additional 50ml anti-mould additives, saving you 15% more than if you were to buy individually.
What if mould comes back after cleaning?
If mould returns after you have used anti-mould cleaning products, then the likelihood is that you may have a leak that is providing the perfect environment for mould to grow.
Although fixing the leak will stop further mould from developing, until the wall becomes dry, mould will continue to grow. So in this instance you may need to contact professional mould cleaners who can best advise you on how to proceed.

Should I remove mould from my walls before using anti mould paint?
![Should I remove mould from my walls before using anti mould paint?](https://www.i-sells.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/shutterstock_360882272.jpg)
Yes, you should attempt to remove mould from your walls before applying anti mould paint, however, depending on the severity of the mould, it should lead you to contact an expert before painting over it with anti-mould paint.
How long does anti mould paint last?
Our Kair anti mould paint lasts for 5 years, providing protection against black mould on walls and ceilings. This doesn’t mean that the paint will peel away in 5 years, or that the mould will instantly appear after the 5-year countdown is over.
The likelihood is, after 5 years the antifungal properties in the paint may have expired. What this means is if your home is still an environment where mould can thrive, it will re-appear after some time, leading you to start the removal and painting process again.
Alternatively, if you used the 5 years to create an inhospitable environment for mould, supplemented with a ventilation routine, the mould may not return.
Natural mould cleaners
Natural remedies are always a good option to test. Distilled white vinegar is known to destroy mould due to its acidic properties and can be helpful in instances of new mould growth, but for extensive and deep mould, stronger products should be used, or experts should intervene.
