In this blog, we will explain how to connect metal ducts whilst providing information that can help you when it comes to ducting and all things HVAC related.
To prevent mould, fresh air should constantly be introduced into your dwelling daily, as it helps to regulate temperature and reduce condensation. Introducing fresh air can be as simple as having a ventilation routine, or installing extractors or PIV systems. Almost all of this is facilitated by ducting.
I-Sells is here to provide the answers you need whilst also supplying you with all the information you need to combat mould and have a well-ventilated home.
Is metal ducting suitable for all ventilation systems?
Although metal ducting has the potential to be used for many ventilation systems, there are some that it shouldn’t be used for. Metal ducting is mainly applied for extraction that can have high temperatures or are a corrosive gas.
In some instances, plastic ducting can not handle this. So for applications such as a cooker hood, plastic ducting is not used. Whereas metal ducting isn’t typically used for ventilation systems like extractor fans.
Does all ventilation need ducting?
Yes and no. Any ventilation that is extracting indoor air, distributing outdoor air, or doing a combination of both would require ducting. This is because there is air being transported from one area to another.
The kind of ventilation that does not require ducting (and we are using the term ventilation loosely here) would be an air conditioner or a fan. These simply redirect and the surrounding air around them, with some altering the temperature.
Is ducting legally required?
![Is ducting legally required?](https://www.i-sells.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/shutterstock_174470948.jpg)
Yes. Ducting falls into the building regulations’ requirement that deals with ventilation, known as ‘Part F’. Part F holds multiple stipulations regarding ventilation in homes, and where it is necessary. Any ventilation device requires ducting of some sort, whether it is short or long.
Obvious examples of ducting being present in your home are…
- A bathroom extractor fan
- A kitchen extractor fan
- A cooker hood
Without ducting, your ventilation systems would be obsolete, and as a result, humidity, smells, smoke, and steam will travel through your home uninterrupted unless you have windows open at all times. The condensation left by humidity will then eventually become mould.
What happens if a home has no ducting?
Your home will have stale air that can be extremely uncomfortable and humid, especially if no windows are ever open, meaning mould will thrive. In a legal sense, the repercussions of not following building regulations can result in…
- Fines
- Removal from the property
- Legal proceedings
The severity of the repercussion is purely a result of the state in which the home is in. If the home has purposely had no ducting installed, and the home has occupants, it can be a lot more severe than if it was a home waiting to have occupants.
Where to buy metal ducting online
Alongside being a provider of mould solutions such as extractor fans and PIV systems, I-Sells also provide ducting for those looking to buy and install their ducting themselves.
We provide round ductwork fittings and accessories in a large range of diameters to suit all purposes, including HVAC systems and extractor fans. Our metal ductwork is manufactured from high-quality galvanised Aluminium.
We understand that it can be confusing trying to navigate the world of ducting if you’re new to it. That is why we strongly recommend asking us any questions you may have. We will ensure that we will try our best to find the perfect solutions for you.
How to connect metal duct

Connecting metal ducting can be relatively simple if you have the tools available. For the most part, metal ducts are prepared with connection in mind. The ends have male and female connections. This allows them to slot into each other.
However, depending on your set-up, and the length of your ducting, installation could become more complicated. In some instances, you may require ducting connectors. For a comprehensive and smooth installation, we recommend having your ducting installed by a professional.
What happens if my metal duct isn’t connected properly?
If the connection to your metal ducting is not connected properly, you will find that air will escape from the ducts, making them far less efficient than they should be. There is also a chance they can disconnect.
Metal ducting that is not connected properly can also be a health hazard, due to the ducting being loose and having the potential to fall because it is not secure.
Additionally, metal ducting that is not connected properly has the risk of developing mould. As the contrasting temperatures inside and outside the duct can result in condensation forming in or outside the ducting.
If left untreated, this condensation can quickly become mould. Mould is known to have serious health implications on people. It has the potential to spread exponentially, if it has spread within your ducting, it would need to be replaced all over again.
Here are some steps you can take to prevent mould on your ductwork:
- Before installing the ducting, make sure the area doesn’t have any leaks or is next to anything that can generate a lot of heat, such as a heating pipe.
- Remove any mould in the room where the ducting will be placed.
- Insulate the ducting
- Track the humidity of the room with a hygrometer.
Should you cut metal ducting?
If the ducting is not flexible, you should not cut it unless you have the tools handy to safely and cleanly cut metal, or have a professional to do it for you. Flexible ducts can be cut with no issue.
Can a professional install my ducting for me?
Yes. HVAC technicians offer services which can include installation of a HVAC system and its ducting for most if not all kinds of properties. Please note that the complexity of the job at hand could alter the price if there are no fixed rates for certain services.
Alternatively, you can install your ducting yourself, as long as it ends up being compliant to part F of building regulations, and does not compromise the safety of any person in the property.
Though this second option can be especially difficult if you have no experience, equipment, or guidance. If you are struggling, please feel free to contact us, and we may be able to point you in the right direction.
Should I insulate metal ducting?
Although you don’t have to insulate your ducting, it is beneficial to do so. Insulation helps to maintain a consistent temperature through the ducting as a whole. This prevents the opportunity for humidity or condensation to form.
In addition to this, insulation also adds an extra layer of durability, although it isn’t exactly made to sustain damage in the first place.
What is the most efficient way to have ducting set up?
To make the most of your ducting system, and ensuring it stays secure, it should be insulated, connected with no looseness and installed with as little turns as possible. Making sure that your ducting is as straight as it can be helps to maximise airflow with the ventilation system it is paired alongside.
