Resetting a bathroom extractor fan may be necessary in certain situations. But is it achieved in the same way despite the model of the extractor fan? Or is it done differently depending on the model of the extractor fan?
In this blog, we will address the question ‘How to reset bathroom extractor fan?’
With new buildings being made to be as energy efficient as possible, and the UK aiming for 95% of its electricity usage to be low carbon by 2030, it is imperative to understand how we can make the most of our ventilation. This is where applications such as extractor fans and heat recovery ventilation units come in.
To prevent mould, fresh air should constantly be introduced into your dwelling daily, as it helps to regulate temperature and reduce condensation. Introducing fresh air can be as simple as having a ventilation routine, or installing extractors or MVHR units. Almost all of this is facilitated by ducting.
Can an extractor fan remove mould?
No. An extractor fan is only capable of preventing mould. If mould has already grown in your bathroom or other room, the most viable way to remove it is through using mould surface cleaners.
How does mould spread?
Mould reproduces from tiny spores. The spores float through the air and deposit on the surfaces. Under adequate temperature, moisture, and nutrient conditions, the spores can form new mould colonies.
If you have found mould in your home, you need to assess if this is your landlord’s responsibility (for example it could be from a leaking roof that needs repairing). Or if the dampness is caused by improper ventilation. To assess your options, click here.
How long does it take for mould to affect you?
A moderate amount of mould can begin to affect someone within days depending on their level of exposure to it. The degree of damage to someone is dependent on their immune system and current level of allergy to mould.
Nobody is designed to live amongst mould, however, some people have a greater resistance to it than others, this does not mean that it should be left to grow.

Resetting a bathroom extractor fan will vary depending on the model of the extractor fan you have. In any case, it is generally not a complicated process, normally pressing and holding one or more buttons on the interface is enough.
However, as we said, the method may be different depending on your model of extractor fan. You can find out by reading the instruction manual that came with your extractor fan. Alternatively, you can find the instruction manual online, or if you’re struggling you can contact the manufacturer.
Why would a bathroom extractor fan need resetting?
A bathroom extractor fan would need resetting in a variety of situations, the most notable reason is if it had stopped working, or reduced output due to insufficient maintenance. Restarting it after conducting maintenance should result in it operating correctly.
Restarting may also be required if electricity has tripped. Although this can vary from building to building.
Does every extractor fan have a reset setting?
Most if not all modern extractor fans will have a method to commence a reset. This functionality is not generally available to older extractor fans. Especially those that were on the cheaper side and installed many years ago.
What happens if I don’t reset my bathroom extractor fan?
Failure to reset your extractor fan in certain situations can result in it to continue working inefficiently, or even prevent it from coming back into function. In addition to telling you how to reset your extractor fan, your instruction manual will also tell you when it should be reset.
If you leave your extractor fan off or leave it working at a lower efficiency than it should, you run the risk of allowing mould to grow in your bathroom. Especially if you don’t use additional ventilation such as an open window.
If mould is allowed to grow on a surface it will easily spread and begin to cause health problems for anyone within its vicinity.

Whether it is mould in your bathroom, or another room, there are signs that you can spot that are an indication that it is beginning to affect you, they are…
- Hair thinning/ hair loss.
- A weaker immune system, this can be seen if you go from rarely being ill to regularly being ill.
- A lingering cough.
- Unexpected skin rashes.
- A lack of vitality.
- Breathing that is slightly more laboured than usual.
- Breathing in the outdoors is more comfortable, than breathing in the home with mould.
- Regular or increased instances of having phlegm in your throat without any illness or contaminants that affect your lungs such as cigarettes.
These are just a handful of symptoms you can experience with mould allergies.
The most definitive way to understand if these issues are caused by mould is by spending an extended period away from it, if those symptoms go away, then you are being affected by an allergy to mould. Additionally, seek your doctor to see if the symptoms you are experiencing are due to other health issues.
Does the state of my windows affect mould growth?
Absolutely. Having windows that are properly installed and insulated is crucial in mould prevention. Any vulnerabilities in installing a window can lead to moisture travelling through it, this creates a secure area for mould to keep growing from, regardless of how often you remove it.
Here are some signs to indicate that your window is a factor in mould growing in your home.
- A draft coming from the window (from the outer edges) even if it’s closed.
- Condensation appears in between the window panes (if it is double glazing).
- Cracks around the edges of the window and the windowsill it is attached to.
- Mould around the window and/or the aforementioned cracks.
Do my windows need replacing if they are contributing to mould growth?
Generally, yes. Once a window has become a source for mould to form, it is difficult to permanently stop it without replacement. However, in some cases, it can be managed.
If you leave your window closed during hot showers in your bathroom, the resulting condensation will enable mould to grow, usually in the corners of the window. A simple way to avoid this is to keep the window open and use your extractor fan during any humid-air-inducing activity such as a shower or bath.
If you forget to open your window during your hot shower or bath, open the window afterwards and ensure you’ve wiped off any condensation that has formed. After this, keep the window open, the extractor fan on, and the bathroom door closed.
