Metal ductwork, if maintained correctly, can last for years, so if you move into a new home, or acquire a building that has metal ductwork, should it be replaced straight away? Or is it not as urgent as we woud initially believe?
In this blog, we will answer the question ‘Should I replace my metal ductwork?’ Whilst providing information that can help you when it comes to ducting and all things HVAC related.
To prevent mould, fresh air should constantly be introduced into your dwelling daily, as it helps to regulate temperature and reduce condensation. Introducing fresh air can be as simple as having a ventilation routine, or installing extractors or PIV systems. Almost all of this is facilitated by ducting.
I-Sells is here to provide the answers you need whilst also supplying you with all the information you need to combat mould and have a well-ventilated home.
Metal ducting explained
Metal ducting, like regular ducting, is used to facilitate ventilation. Metal ducting differs from plastic ducting as it can withstand heat with little to no issues. In addition it is also known to be beneficial for environments that have corrosive compounds in the air. This would be found in industrial environments.
In terms of domestic applications, you would likely find metal ducting connected to a cooker hood. As this is where the most intense heat, and hot byproducts (steam and smoke) would be generated. If you were to use plastic ducting, it would likely melt over time.
Benefits of metal ducting
The benefits of metal ducting are as follows:
- It can be used in rooms that have appliances that emit a lot of heat.
- High-quality galvanised aluminium ensures long-lasting function.
- Ideal for industrial environments .
- Can be insulated..
- Available as rigid or flexible ducting.

Replacing your metal ductwork may be necessary in some situations, although it isn’t entirely. There are some signs you can spot instantly that will tell you it needs replacing. Whereas some issues do not require a wholesale replacement.
The best way to get a definitive answer is to use the services of an HVAC expert, who will be able to provide an in-depth check of your ducting with the relevant equipment. In terms of the obvious signs that you should replace your metal ductwork, they are…
- Severe rusting on the ducting.
- Leaking from the ducting.
- Mould on the ducting.
- The duct has holes or dents besides the connective area which allow air to enter where it should not.
- If the ducting is loose, rattling or shaking.
- If the ductwork is over 20-25 years old.
What happens if I don’t replace my metal ductwork?
Failure to replace the metal ductwork will result in the ventilation system it is facilitating being inefficient, this means that your ventilation system will fail to extract or distribute air correctly. Over time, this can contribute to mould forming.
Additionally, if the physical state of the metal ductwork is extremely poor, there is a chance it could break or fall, which poses serious risks to anyone in the vicinity.
Can metal ductwork get dust inside it?
Yes. Over time it is possible for dust to accumulate in ducting. This is fairly normal, although this happens a lot quicker if there are no filters before the ducting begins. If dust is left to build up within your ductwork, it will result in the ductwork eventually being clogged.
Before this however, you will find that the ducting is much less efficient, this is due to a reduced airflow as a result of the dust being built up.
Should I replace metal ducting if it isn’t old?
Generally, you would not need to replace metal ducting if it isn’t overtly aged and overused. That being said, if any of the aforementioned factors apply to the current ducting you’ve come to own, then it would be advisable to replace it.
Where can I buy metal ducting?

Alongside being a provider of mould solutions such as extractor fans and PIV systems, I-Sells also provide ducting for those looking to buy and install their ducting themselves.
We provide round ductwork fittings and accessories in a large range of diameters to suit all purposes, including HVAC systems and extractor fans. Our metal ductwork is manufactured from high-quality galvanised Aluminium.
Is metal ducting rigid or flexible?
There are many types of metals with different properties, this allows for metal ducting to be rigid or flexible. The properties of metal ducting allows it to be suitable in environments that have corrosive compounds, or a high level of heat.
A rigid duct is easier to set up if you have the space, flexible ducting allows for maneoverability in spaces that rigid ducting can not be applied in. The only downside to flexible ducting is its lack of durability as a result of its flexibility. Furthermore, flexible ducting must be bent in a specific manner so the airflow is not compromised.
How often do I need to buy ducting?
Ducting, if taken care of correctly, and as long as there are no freak occurrences that can damage it, can last between 20-25 years. This is an extremely long time and considering the prices of ducting, it is not an investment that will be wasted whatsoever.
Even if your ventilation system changes, there is a chance that you won’t need to replace the ducting, unless it is severely damaged internally or externally.
How to make ducting last longer
Making your ducting last longer is simple, but requires your attention and time. Here are some actions you can do to ensure your ducting lasts.
- Insulate your ducting.
- Repair any leaks before installing your ducting.
- Keep your ducting as short & with as few changes in direction as possible.
- If using flex ducting, ensure it is fully extended before installing, as air can get trapped in the spiral areas that are not extended, which causes dust to build up over time.
Furthermore, using the services of an HVAC expert allows you to have a professional assess your ducting and ventilation system. They will be able to provide insight, repairs, maintenance actions, and other helpful hints and tips to make your ducting last as long as possible.
Do extractor fans need metal ducting?
No. Although you can use metal ducting, we would recommend using plastic ducting for an extractor fan. Extractor fans work to remove humidity from a room, mainly bathrooms and kitchens. This means it will be dealing with moisture frequently.
Considering this, if you use a metal duct, you will find that it will rust over time, this is why plastic ducting is the preferred option in these instances.
Is plastic ducting as good as metal ducting?
Like metal ducting, plastic ducting thrives in specific situations. It would not be fair to judge them against each other when they are built to deal with specific issues. Plastic ducting can not be used in environments with high heat, whereas metal ducting shoudn’t be used in humid and moisture-ridden environments.
