Mould is a scourge we all wish to be without, aside from how terrible it looks and smells, it can also trigger health complications. Mould should be eradicated as soon as you find it. But what is the fastest way to get rid of mould?
To prevent mould, fresh air should constantly be introduced into your dwelling daily, as it helps to regulate temperature and reduce condensation. Introducing fresh air can be as simple as having a ventilation routine, or installing extractors or PIV systems. Almost all of this is facilitated by ducting.
I-Sells is here to provide the answers you need whilst also supplying you with all the information you need to combat mould and have a well-ventilated home.
What is mould? Why should it go?
Mould, otherwise known as damp, is a kind of fungus that grows on wet surfaces. Mould comes in a variety of colours: Black, Green, Brown, Grey and White. It can be difficult to identify mould by colour as it can occur in many shades. Some of the most common mould strains in the home are:
- Black Mould – Also called Stachybotrys chartarum, Black mould is commonly found in bathrooms and wet rooms but can also occur on cold exterior walls in habitable rooms such as the bedroom or living room.
- Cladosporium – Commonly found in bathrooms, under sinks, and around faucets but it can grow on surfaces like carpets, furniture, walls, and floors.
Mould reproduces from tiny spores. The spores float through the air and deposit on the surfaces. Under adequate temperature, moisture, and nutrient conditions, the spores can form new mould colonies.
If you have found mould in your home, you need to assess if this is your landlord’s responsibility (for example it could be from a leaking roof that needs repairing). Or if the dampness is caused by improper ventilation. To assess your options, click here.
You should not be amongst mould and aim to get rid of it immediately, as it can be known to affect people’s health or intensify health conditions if you have a mould allergy.
Why does mould keep coming back?
In this instance, there is an issue in the area in which the mould is growing, this issue is causing a level of condensation which is enough for mould to grow. You could have cracks in the wall that is letting air in, you may have a pipe that is leaking behind or above/below the wall, or your windows may not be properly insulated.
Unless you deal with the issue that is causing the environment for the mould to thrive, it will keep coming back, no matter how many products you use on it.
Is mould sickness real?
![Is mould sickness real?](https://www.i-sells.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/shutterstock_685743511-1.jpg)
Yes. Mould can severely affect your immune and respiratory system, as the spores are easily breathable and not obvious to see through the human eye. Having a mould allergy will result in you displaying the following symptoms when exposed to mould.
Mould sickness, which those in the medical field refer to as a mould allergy can manifest itself in many ways, it is subjective to the person themselves. Symptoms can include:
- A regular cough
- Frequently falling ill (weakened immune system)
- Red or dry itchy skin
- Watery eyes
- Nasal congestion
Can I clean mould myself?
Yes, but it is strongly recommended to hire professionals to clean any mould, as they will have all the right equipment and precautions needed as standard. However, we understand not all of our readers may have access to such services.
If this is the case, you can clean any mould yourself, but follow these rules before attempting it, for the sake of your health.
- Wear a mask, gloves and eye protection
- If possible, purchase disposable coveralls, if not, wear old clothes that cover your arms and legs and head, and dispose of them after cleaning the mould.
- Choose your method of removal, using a surface cleaner, or using a natural remedy like vinegar.

Regardless of what you use to get rid of mould, the fastest way to get rid of it is before it spreads more. Cleaning mould that’s been there for 2 days will be easier to get rid of than mould that’s been there for 2 months. Act immediately whenever you find mould.
In terms of methods, we at I-Sells not only provide mould prevention solutions such as extractor fans and PIV systems, but we also provide mould-removing solutions.
– Surface Cleanser Concentrate
– Anti-Mould Additive For Emulsion & Gloss Paint – 50 ml
The fastest way to get rid of mould would be through using the surface cleanser concentrate that we supply. Again the time it takes for it to work will depend entirely on the amount of mould you are dealing with.
Natural mould solutions
If you are looking for natural alternatives to get rid of mould, try using distilled white vinegar, the acidic properties in the vinegar help to dissolve the mould. (This method may prove to be ineffective against a large collection of mould, so don’t rely on this method entirely.)
All you need to do is:
- Place 10-20 ml of the distilled white wine vinegar into a spray bottle
- Spray on the mouldy area
- Leave for at least one hour
- (optional) Using a mix of baking soda and warm water, spray the area you sprayed with the vinegar
- Wipe the mould with a clean disposable rag
If there are noticeable and effective results, repeat this method until it is completely gone, if it fails, this means that the mould is penetrated deeper than surface level, if our mould control solutions still don’t make an improvement, it is best to call local mould cleaning services.
Can leaks in my house cause mould?
Yes, absolutely, if your windows are not airtight for example, any moisture that makes its way in through the spaces from outside, or the condensation that occurs as a result of the room temperature and outside temperature, will become the perfect breeding ground for mould.
Leaks in your pipes can cause mould, as the fluctuating temperature and the fact the moisture can’t be wiped away gives mould free rein to grow, this eventually spreads through the walls, at which point you become aware of it.
What does a hygrometer do?
A hygrometer is a device that measures the humidity of the area it is in. This is helpful if you have mould that always appears in one room, having an understanding of where the humidity is can help you have an idea of what to do to make the room unsuitable for mould.
We would definitely recommend this device for anybody who is experiencing mould issues, or wants to keep track of the humidity in their home to prevent any mould outbreaks.
